There are many places to visit in and around Wanlockhead.
The museum is only few minutes walk from the cottage. It showcases the rich mining heritage of the region that dates back many centuries. The tour covers the Lochnell mine, miners cottages, visitor centre, miners library and gold panning centre. Panning for gold is included in the ticket so why not have a go!
Drumlanrig Castle
Drumlanrig Castle is situated on the Queensberry Estate in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Drumlanrig Castle is a 17th century Scottish castle with beautiful gardens, woodlands & country estate. The category A listed castle is the Dumfriesshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. It is open to the public at set times.
Visit Sanquhar
Sanquhar is a small market town in the Nith Valley and is only 20 minutes away. Visit the Tolbooth Museum where the history of the village is revealed. The town boast of the oldest post office which has been operating continuously since 1712. Dont miss the annual The Sanquhar Riding of the Marches.
Discover Biggar
Biggar is a historic market town on the northern edge of the Southern Uplands. A 30 minute drive from the cottage, the main street is lined with centuries-old houses and Biggar Kirk dates from the 16th century. One of the town’s main attractions is a world famous Victorian puppet theatre, make sure you book before you go.
Explore Moffat
Moffat is a nearby town, about 35 minutes drive away, with an attractive town centre, a coaching stop and a Conservation Area with a rich heritage and history and a thriving cultural, creative and musical scene. It is home of the famous ‘Moffat Toffee’ and it has a lovely river walk, theatres, art galleries and shops galore
