Local Walks
Wanlockhead is located on the Lowther Hills providing many local options either on the hills or through the village. There are many local routes on the Lowther hills and the village is on the on the Southern Upland Way and conveniently placed halfway along the track.
Gold Panning
Why not try your hand at Gold panning? Gold can be found in many areas of the Lowther Hills around Wanlockhead and Leadhills where gold panning has been popular for centuries. Gold can be panned in the Wanlock Water, The Mennock Water and their tributaries. The Lead mining museum runs a 5 hour gold panning course. Individual Day Gold Panning Licences are required and can be procured at the museum.
Leadhills Golf Course
Leadhills Golf Course is Scotland’s highest golf course. Located about 2 miles from the cottage in the neighbouring village of Leadhills, this 9 hole course offers keen golfers a challenging game in unique and stunning surroundings.
Happy Hooves Sanquhar
A short drive takes your to Happy Hooves Sanquhar that offers classes about horses and how to ride these majestic and gentle creatures. Their experienced coaches provide riding for children above 3 years of age to adults from half-hour rides to 6-hour treks.
Cycling
The countryside, particularly the spectacular three beautiful passes, Crawick, Mennock and Dalveen, is a great choice for keen road cyclists. Further a field offers some of the best mountain biking venues in the World including five of the renowned 7Stanes Centres. Park your cycles in the shed behind the cottage.
South West Coastal 300
Wanlockhead sits on the South West Coastal 300 route and is a great stop over to explore the Lowther hills and mining heritage of Scotland. The South West Coastal 300 is a road trip around the South West of Scotland that allows you to escape back to nature.
Crawick Multiverse
Take a stroll in the Crawick Multiverse. The multiverse is an amazing land art installation for you to explore and enjoy , whether you are interested in cosmology, science, art or just want to walk and savour the beautiful landscape.
